You guys, this year has been a very special year for me and my blog. Every year comes with good and bad, with highs and lows.
You learn from the good, but I believe you learn more from the bad, which makes you stronger and helps you avoid those bad situations again.
The blogging business is just like any other business, whether you are in sales, corporate it is really not different. You will encounter all kinds of people, good and bad. People that approach for a specific reason, to use you. I guess the only difference is that blogging is very social media related, so you don’t leave it at the office. I’ve seen people trash each other, unfollow each other and then be bffs again, for me that is the epitome of hipocracy and I can’t deal with that. I am a polite person and would always say hi, but that doesn’t mean I am going to engage in a conversation with someone I don’t care for.
So people will see at an event and don’t say hi to you, and my mission in life has become to approach all those people and say hi to try to teach them so manners. If I don’t say hi to you, is because I didn’t see you period.
I am a very friendly and inclusive person, I want to introduce everyone I know, so we can all get along. I have realized that is more wishful thinking, because in real life it doesn’t work and has back fired on me (oh well at least I tried). Some times people may confuse a friendly, happy person for a softy or an idiot, but I am not one or the other. It may just take me a little longer to figure out, who is real and who is fake. A little group I had managed to put together is no more and I got royally screwed by a few of them and others just vanished (everything happens for a reason). Some people don’t know a good friend, even if it hits them in the head. Their loss not mine, thank God I have really good friends from my childhood, from different cities and countries and newer friends in and out of the blogging business that love and support me as I love and support them.
I always give without expecting anything in return. But it gets to a point in life when you realize you are the only one giving in a relationship. And that you are stock in a one way street, whether is in your personal or professional life and it’s time to step away.
I am not a confrontational person, so if you do something bad, like you lied to me or talked behind my back and I find out, I will from that persons life. I give people may chances, but when I am done, I am done.
I was raised to value myself, love myself, be confident and don’t let anyone put me down. And I live by that, so a few missteps will not bring me down, it will make me stronger.
And situations like that, have made re-evaluate who I am going to let to close to me, on a personal level and professional as well. It is really hard to make friends as adults, there is always jealousy, envy. People want to copy your style, your captions and even your blog signature, and I just don’t have time for that.
But there are a few red flags to figure out who is drama, who is getting close to you with a hidden agenda:
The invite to lunch and last question before you leave is how do you it?
When all of their previous friends before you, are not their friends anymore.
When they tell you, I’m so jelly (they actually are)
I am here to work hard, and make my dreams come true doing what I love, just as I have done in past with my previous jobs and business. This is best job I’ve ever had and I am the happiest I have ever been, so I am not going to let anyone or anything get in the way of that, and no one should.
I really don’t do new years resolutions, what I want to try to be less emotional and more business focus ( think more with my head and less with my heart). Bring you the best content possible in beauty, fashion, and so much more.
Well that got really personal really quick, with that being said, I want to share my highlights from 2016, from events, to trips to photoshoots. To brands I have worked with, to some pretty amazing people I have met along the way.
First highlight, was my trip to San Diego in January 2016. I was invited by Cabi to attend their Cabi Scoop, it was such a great experience. They hosted me for 2 days, and I got to meet other Cabi bloggers which I am still in contact with and hope to see this coming January in San Diego again.
The last week of January 2016, Douglas and I went to Miami to celebrate our wedding anniversary (where we met and got married).
The lovelies from Toyota, gave us this gorgeous Camry to test drive around Miami. We met with friends and family and we were having a great time.
And the day after of anniversary I started feeling sick and ended up in the hospital, and was diagnosed with gallbladder infection. I had to go into surgery to have it removed, see when I mean there is always good and bad in every situation. The good in is this situation is that I was in my hometown, and my sisters where there to take care of me, until I got out of the hospital and came back to LA (love you Nina and Lili).
In April 2016, I was invited by Cabi to visit their Headquarters in Carson, CA to experience all the behind the scenes of how this amazing company works. Me and all these amazing bloggers, spent the day getting to know more about Cabi and each other.
We enjoyed breakfast, lunch, and ended the day doing a photoshoot and wearing all Cabi, and we got to keep the clothes and got some pretty amazing gifts. It was a day I will never forget.
In April 2016, I got invited to Coachella again for the second time. 2016 was my second year blogging and I had met more brands and PRs I got so many invites from the Popsugar Cabana club, to the Nylon party, and so many more. The schedule was so tight I couldn’t make it to a few parties.
In August I was approached by Brandilynn Aines, an amazing photographer from the East Coast. She told me she was going to be in LA for a few days and she wanted to shoot me. I was so excited to shot with an actual photographer other than Douglas. So I jumped at the opportunity. I wanted to try something different, it was such a great experience to come out of my comfort zone. She made do different things and taught me a few tips and tricks. Thank you Brandilynn for contacting me, it so great to meet and can’t wait for the next one.
In September 2016, I attend NYFW for the 3rd year in arrow (I’ve never been in February yet). And this time around it was nothing short of amazing.
From fashion shows, to presentation, to events and gifting suites, to this photoshoot at the Glass Houses for the ShopStyle Social House, shot by photographer Ugla Hauks. It was one pretty amazing trip (minus 1 hick up) and that showed me how far I have come (hard work pays off) I have worked so hard for MY connections and I am so proud of myself that I have come this far on my own. That is when my Italian side kicks in, we are very independent and very proud people. I don’t go asking people how to contact brands or how to write an email, I do my own research and I figure it out on my own and there is nothing more rewarding than that.
I love to share what I know with people (I’ve always been like that I got from my Daddy) and if you ask for advise I will give it to you. But there is no successful person in the world that will share all they know, so don’t expect it from me.
In October 2016 I was invited by to get my hair done by Tresemme and makeup done by Clarins for a photoshoot with Photographer Nico and who can say no to that, right?
Douglas has always taken my photos, and believe it or not I am very shy, so getting out of my comfort zone is good for me.
And the photographer knew I was kind of nervous, but once he made me laugh (and it doesn’t take that much) I loosen up and it was all good.
Also in October 2016 Lexus gave this baby aka Lexus IS to test drive for a week. We drove it all over LA and A day before we had to return I saw this tree by my house and I had to stop a capture this red/pink situation.
Can’t wait to see my Toyota family again in January!
After many requests from brands and PRs asking me to write about menswear and asking me if Douglas would wear the samples they were sending, I finally did!
I did a few post starting in June and I got great feedback, so we decided to launch DouglasLagos.com and it has been pretty amazing for Douglas, I am so proud of my baby.
And this is a little photoshoot we did in November 2016 at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel, for the Rodeo Gives back event shot by Marley Carlyle.
And these are the amazing lady blogger from that same event, we laughs, took pictures and enjoyed a delicious breakfast while donating coats to the Salvation Army.
And last but definitely not least my Nylon Español family, I love you guys to the moon and back. I am so happy I got to meet you Marty. In January I was invited by Toyota to attend the Cali Bash concert and that’s where I met Marty and we bonded over Reggaeton, J. Balvin and Justin Bieber and that is bond that can never be broken.
At this event I was asked to speak (which I have never done before) and I was freaking out and super nervous.
I didn’t write anything, I just went with it and spoke from my heart (which is the only way I know how to) and I didn’t suck at it, so says Douglas!
The last event of the year was December 19, 2016 with Nylon Español Christmas Dinner hosted by Jack Daniels. And guess what? I not only had to speak again, but I was interviewed for a web series coming to their website soon. In the mean time, check out some amazing content at Nylon Español website. You can see more from this amazing evening on Nylon Español Instagram page.
I thank you so much for always stopping by, I really appreciate each and every one of you for all the love and support. I hope you enjoyed this Best of 2016 recap as much as I enjoyed going through memory lane while putting it together for you. I got to travel to San Diego, Miami, Palm Springs and New York. In 2017 I already have 2 trips confirmed for January. Hope you have a super duper 2017!
With Lots of Love,
