The Hippie generation defined a great deal in America, from great music to many fashion designs and philosophies. Because this generation was a stark contrast to the ways of life by the general population, there was indeed some controversy and prejudices about what this generation was all about.

Since the sixties and seventies, much has changed in the world and the fears that people had about the well-known hippie generation have long since subsided as people balanced out their prejudices and examined the truths about what this generation was really all about. Most hippies were deeply involved in the exploration of music, culture, religion, community activism and civil rights.

Overall, while times were turbulent and some hippies were involved in the exploration of drugs, most of the hippies grew out of that as they aged and had families of their own. But while there were some fads of the hippies that did not last, there have been some great things from that generation that did.

Some of the great defining parts of that generation include: greater civil rights, wonderful and diverse music, greater understanding of religion and great fashion styles. In fact, the fashion of that generation in all its simplicity has inspired some of the great fashion designers to integrate the styles into more modern fashions.

Some of the more popular fashion trends from the sixties have had very little down time since the sixties and have continued on for over five decades. These styles have now become fashion classics associated with this rich and diverse time in American history. Starting from the beginning of the hippie era in the 1960’s until today, the fashion icon clothing items that have remained most steadfast include such classic clothing as: Bell Bottom pants, high top boots, smock tops, sun dresses, tie dye shirts, harem pants and any clothing that has flower power or psychedelic colors.

Each of these clothing items has been part of the attire worn by each successive generation to some degree or another since the sixties. This is a rare occurrence as most often clothing fashion trends are usually short lived just as are many other trends and fads.

When looking for the classic hippie styles that are considered must haves, bell bottom pants, harem pants, tie dye shirts and sun dresses are definable trademark styles of this wonderfully cultural generation.

For people who are looking to feel a little bit of that generation come alive in their hearts any of these clothing styles certainly fit the times and offer a light free flowing feeling to style.
