I’m sure you’ve experienced the frustration of laying out for hours and still looking #pasty..or only having a #sunburn to show for long days in the sun. You might even be tempted at times to go outside without #sunscreen, in hopes that the sun will cook you to a golden brown. No matter what your skin type is, here are some tips for looking/staying #tan even when it feels like the odds are not in your favor.
1. Invest in Some Good Sunscreen – This may seem counter-intuitive, but good sunscreen is what makes a good tan. If you’re going to be laying out for hours at a time, make sure you find a good (waterproof) sunscreen that is at least SPF 30. If you are fair skinned, slather on some SPF 50.
2. Turn Over – Sometimes, the reason you’re burning is because you are laying face up or face down for way too long. When you start feeling hot (not just warm) it’s probably time to turn over. It might seem like a good idea to lay under the sun until you feel like your skin is burning off…but all that will get you is a nice little trip to the hospital because of sun poisoning.
3. Stay Active – Some of the best tans are the ones that happen when you’re not trying. Go outside regularly to run, play some #frisbee, read a #book, etc. You’ll find that a small amount of time in the sun (with sunscreen) everyday will result in a healthy golden glow (or, for you redheads out there….some beautiful #freckles).
4. Invest In A Nice Bronzer – Faking it is the safest way to ensure a tan, while also staying skin-cancer free. You might be able to achieve a nice glow by staying in the sun for a little while, but beyond that it might be safer to try other methods. Though you might dream of having an entirely tanned body, you’ll find that people aren’t going to be focusing on your arms and legs as much as they will your face. Try finding a nice powder #bronzer from your local drugstore or @Sephora. Use a #kabuki (large powder) brush to apply it on your cheek bones and on your nose to produce a natural sun-kissed look.
5. Moisturize – Keeping your summer color is easy if you have a good #bodylotion / cream. Exfoliating too much without adding any extra moisture to your skin will result in short-lasting color and a lot of peeling sunburn. If you notice that you have a sunburn that is peeling, resist the temptation to pick at it. Apply a heavy duty moisturizer (look for one that contains SPF).
6. Love Your Skin – No matter what color your skin is, learn to love it. Walk with confidence. You are one of a kind, and comparing your skin tone to others is like trying to compare a cucumber to a chocolate bar – we’re all different in our own ways. Be happy with the skin you’re in, and take care of yourself as you enjoy your summer under the sun.
